Gandharva Beginner Laya Course for dancers
About The Course
The Gandharva professional-level laya course is an advanced program aimed at students dedicated to mastering rhythm in dance. Designed for those with at least 4-5 years of dance experience or those who have completed ISTD Grades 4, 5, or 6, this course focuses on developing a deep understanding of rhythm.
Students will enhance their rhythmic sensitivity, improving their timing, choreography, jathi recitation, and ability to teach others. Additionally, the course prepares students to confidently lead and conduct recitals on stage for other dancers.
Prerequisites
- 4 to 5 years of dance and possibly exposure to arangetram level items
- Having learnt the basic concepts in Laya beginner course

- Karvai practice part 1 (syllables with Karvai constant)
- Karvai practice part 2 (syllables with Karvai variation)
- Five Jathi eka talam Part 2
- Basic breathing exercises
- Other talam basics

- 175 Talam discussion and other Talam details
Learning Outcomes You Can Expect
- Recite and demonstrate putting talam on the palm, the different talam korvais learnt in the class in different Jaathis using more complex gap patterns.
- Ability to recite longer and more complex jathis with more complex talas
- Prepare for an advanced level tala course where they will learn to compose their own jathis to include in their own dance pieces.
- Emote the abhinaya of the selected items
- Practice with cymbals so that they can conduct the dance recitals well and get feedback from the teacher on their patterns and choreographies.
